Alt Ardoch House, Lamlash
Alt Ardoch House is an artist's island retreat offering spectacular mountain and coastal views.
This traditional Arran house has the best of both, old on the outside and modern on the inside and it is enhanced by inspirational artwork throughout. It is popular with both couples and families with all the comforts of home and an accessible location just outside Lamlash.
The house has a spacious living room with a cosy gas-burning stove, deep carpets, comfy sofas and glorious sea views. There is a fully equipped kitchen with dining area and more lovely views and a separate utility room and a cloakroom to the rear of the house.
On the first floor, there are two double bedrooms and a single bedroom, all with sea views. The bedrooms are softly furnished with fine linen, high quality duvets and pillows to ensure a peaceful sleep. There is also a family bathroom with bath and shower over.
Outside, there are terraces to the front and rear gardens with seating; and a large lawn with fruit trees and herbaceous borders set within a backdrop of pine forests. The rear terrace is secluded and faces south, a perfect place to relax.
There is a footpath a short distance from the house via Cuddy Dook and the public tennis courts to the beach and the village amenities of Lamlash. If you are returning after dark though you will need a torch! The nearest village is 1.6 miles by road.
Alt Ardoch House is a self-catering holiday let for a maximum of 5 guests (plus a baby sleeping in a cot). Kindly note that this property may only be occupied by the guests listed on the booking form.
Two doubles and one single.
Family bathroom with bath and shower over. There is also a cloakroom / WC on the ground floor.
The kitchen is fully equipped with dining area, gas hob and electric oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge / freezer. All crockery, cooking utensils, pots and pans, small appliances, baking equipment, cutlery and glassware.
There is a separate utility area with washing machine and tumble dryer.
There is a lovely sitting room with mountain and sea views. There is a big gas-burning stove, plenty of comfy seating and a flatscreen TV with freeview channels and a DVD player.
Bed linen and towels are provided (please bring own beach / swimming towels). Tea towels, oven gloves and cleaning cloths are also provided.
Utilities / Essentials
All electricity, including electric storage / panel heaters and calor gas for the stove are included. The house now has high speed fibre optics broadband but we cannot guarantee availability at all times due to the variable level of service from our provider. Please be aware that the mobile phone reception is variable with all service providers.
A starter supply of household cleaning essentials is included, i.e. washing powder, dishwasher tablets, cleaning products and toilet tissue.
There is a handy co-op supermarket in Lamlash (1.6 miles from the house) and this is open from 7am-10pm (7 days). There is a chemist in Lamlash and Whiting Bay and a post office in Whiting Bay. Petrol is available in Brodick and Whiting Bay (Whiting Bay Garage & MBS Mon-Sat). Whiting Bay offers independent stores selling local produce. There is a secluded south facing terrace with table and chairs and large garden area. Additional seating area to the front with panoramic sea views.
There is driveway parking for 2 cars next to the house.
The house is ideal for families or for 2 couples to share. There is a travel cot and highchair available (please request at the time of booking as these are shared with the adjoining property).
For the comfort of all our guests, pets are not permitted in this property or in the grounds.
Smoking is not permitted in this property.
Unfortunately, we would not recommend this house for wheelchair users due to the steps up to the house and the first floor may not be accessible.
There is also an attached holiday cottage for up to four guests that is completely separate but may be ideal for two families or larger groups to book together (Alt Ardoch Cottage).
A car is advised for convenience and to travel to other parts of the island.
"Fallen in love"
"We have just come back from what we would both say was our best ever holiday and we did not want to leave the house or the island. We arrived a day early because of predicted ferry disruptions due to Storm Barbara. We only knew this because Suzanne who managed our booking contacted us to let us know. The owner of the house let us have the extra night free of charge which we felt was very lovely of him and superb customer service for Suzanne to have told us of the problem. It was dark when we got to the house but lamps, lights and the heating had all been left on for us which was just so welcoming. There was also a gorgeous hamper which included our own little Christmas tree. We did wonder at first whether the house was slightly further from the village than we had hoped but our worries were dispelled the next morning when we used the Cuddy Dook footpath which took us down in less than 10 minutes. Torches were thoughtfully provided so that we could use the path at night after sampling the amazing red wines at the Pier Head Tavern. The view from the house is breathtaking and changes with the blink of an eye. Eating breakfast and dinner in the kitchen looking out at the Holy Isle will remain in my memory forever. The art work in the house is just fabulous and inspired me to visit the art gallery in Whiting Bay where I bought a few things including a print of a robin redbreast to remind us of the robin that used to come to the window each morning to feed on the seeds we had left out. We usually do a lot of reading on holiday but neither of us opened a single book. From the house we found two fantastic walks one to Brodick and one to Whiting Bay which included the new man made walkway which came as a light relief in places. We also did a lot of driving (we hired a car from the garage in Brodick). No traffic lights and no roundabouts and only a few roads so really easy to get about. The only supermarket on the island is the Co-Op (we found 3) but all really well stocked and we didn't go without anything we needed at all. There is so much to do and it is so beautiful and our home for the 11 nights just couldn't have been better located or designed. A perfect getaway and we shall certainly be back." Dawn W (Dec-16)
"Just returned from a week in Arran with my boyfriend and 9 year old son. Wow were the words we used when opening the door. The house was just fantastic, lovely and warm and homely with just the best views from pretty much every window. We were met with a lovely welcome basket and a handy local restaurant guide with a copy of most menus (great touch). The location was very handy for Lamlash, Whiting Bay and Brodick although most places aren't very far away. The weather prevented us from crossing the road and using the path down to the waterfront but then we tended to take the car to most places. Loads of artwork to look at and appreciate in the house which did encourage us to visit the Arran art gallery in Whiting bay. Book here you will most definitely not be disappointed. Great big garden at the back but again the weather prevented us enjoying it to its full potential. Front garden is also equally picturesque but it's difficult not to be distracted by the views over Lamlash bay and out to the Holy Isle. Would definitely return." K Hilton Apr-16
"Lovely Cottage, beautiful views"
"We really enjoyed our short stay in this lovely cottage. The location was great being just outside Lamlash and the view was great. The garden was ideal for the kids to practise their rugby in! We enjoyed some lovely walks, the autumn colours were stunning, also spotted seals and the kids explored the rock pools. "The best holiday home from home"
"We booked this in Feb/March this year and were kept well informed from the beginning by the agents. This is a real treasure where everything has been considered. We use holiday rentals regularly and this is the best to date. The standard of accommodation is very high, just like the pictures. Rooms were spacioius and comfortable." (Jul-14)
There are some good quality restaurants nearby and we recommend the Glenisle Hotel, the Drift Inn, The Lamlash Bay Hotel in Lamlash and Felicity's at Bar Eden in Whiting Bay - all within easy reach by car or taxi. The main village of Brodick offers a larger supermarket and there are excellent leisure and dining amenities including the highly recommended boutique-style Douglas Hotel and the family-friendly Auchrannie Resort. Little Rock Cafe in Brodick is also recommended.
If you are looking for an active break, there are numerous footpaths and cycle routes around the island, with circular walks to waterfalls and ancient sites for all the family, challenging ridge walks and climbs for the more experienced and easy coastal routes. You can try a new activity with experienced local guides, from sea kayaking to paragliding or improve your skills on a mountain bike session. And for the golfers - there are seven courses around the island open to non-members. The nearest are Lamlash and Whiting Bay, open all year round offering friendly club facilities.

The changeover day is Saturday and this is flexible in the quieter months. The earliest arrival time is 3.30pm and the departure time is 10am at the end of the holiday.
Short breaks are sometimes available outside of peak holiday periods, minimum of 3 nights and subject to availability.
Availability & Rates
Alt Ardoch House is currently only available between October and Easter, including the festive periods of Christmas and New Year. As a guide, the weekly rates are from £673 - £895 for up to 5 guests. Please note there is also a security/"Good Housekeeping" deposit of £200 payable with the balance. This deposit is returned within 7 days of departure, subject to any charges for excess cleaning or breakages.
